Leadership Development is another of the eight methods, and is equally important as rank advancement. This past weekend, we had 18 Scouts complete the Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST) course. This course gives them some basic information about their leadership role in the Troop, how the Troop is organized, how the Troop operates, and supplies some tools for their leadership toolbox. After completing this course, they are eligible to wear the "Trained" patch on their sleeve.
Requirements for NYLT Participants
- Minimum age 13
- Minimum First Class Rank

What if your Scout has already taken the course? Youth are needed to staff all of these leadership courses. Teaching helps them to develop their leadership muscles even more than participating as a student! Each year, our Council schedules six NYLT courses and our District schedules two Oak Leaf courses. That's eight opportunities to staff leadership courses outside of the Troop but within our own Council. More information about staffing NYLT can be found here:
If you have any questions about NYLT, our very own Lester Cox (who is on the adult staff of Session 1) would be happy to answer them. If you have questions about ILST, please direct them to Steve Sweeney. Just click our name to send us a message.
