- For newer scouts, this is an excellent opportunity to get acquainted with camping in the 'back-country', with lots of instruction about:
- Equipment: How to select it; and how to pack it (click the link for an extensive blog post about backpacking gear)
- How to set up camp and cook when backpacking (tents, and cooking delicious freeze-dried chili mac over alcohol stoves)
- Base-camp will be near a 600-foot, hikable cliff -- with lots of day-hikes to choose from
- For older scouts, you can be challenged in the back-country:
- Experience a great 7-13 mile round-trip hike (staying at 2 different campsites). This is a great shake-down opportunity for Philmont crews!
- Check out a fern cave
- Hike up and down the Haynes ridge
- Experience a great 7-13 mile round-trip hike (staying at 2 different campsites). This is a great shake-down opportunity for Philmont crews!
We won’t need Grubmasters, as everyone will be eating ready-to-eat meals, like we do on our back-country adventures. The troop will purchase the meals and collect a fee from all. How much simpler can you get?
Here are tentative details:
- 1/19 - meet at scout hut at 7am; leave no later than 7:45am. This will be about a 5 hour trip.
- 1/20 - Hiking, hiking, hiking - Choices for both younger and older scouts
- 1/21 - Troop provides cold breakfast; pack up and leave for DFW. Stop along the way for lunch – send scouts with $10. Back home between 3-5pm.
Adult help needed!
We need at least two additional adults to help with the younger scouts in camp and on their day hikes. That way, Kevin and I can take our Philmont-bound scouts on their extended overnight hike.
We need to hear from you if you are interested in hiking with us!
Don't hesitate to contact us with any questions you might have.
