The previous month's campout was also a grand success, held at Colorado Bend State Park. Everyone got to participate in guided spelunking tours of caves that are not open to the public, and only available by guided tour. We had 7 new scouts on this campout that had just crossed over to the troop, accompanied by all of their parents! (In this photo, new dad Steve Mooney enjoys breakfast prepared by Rob Pinkston.) It was a long drive to and from the park, but worth the effort. |
Over spring break, there will be 2 separate troop trips. One group of scouts will go with Jay Downs to spend a week hiking in the Grand Canyon, while another group will spend part of the week in West Texas, going to the Guadalupe Mountains National Park for day hiking and exploration.
Camping during this time of year is so much fun, with the cool (or cold) weather a stark contrast to the sweaty campouts of summer and early fall! Even if some of them are wet campouts, there is a real satisfaction that comes from learning what it takes to be prepared for cold and/or wet weather. Hopefully our scouts are refining their checklists to make sure that the next time, they have everything they need to keep dry and warm...
This is also recruiting season, and it looks like we will have a very large class of new Webelos who have decided to join our troop. A group of 8 have already crossed over, with at least 2 more groups to come! It appears that our program has things to offer that you don't find with many other troops. That is a testament to all the work put in by all of our adult leaders, for which we are extremely grateful.
In the meantime, everyone keep warm and dry, and we will see you at an upcoming meeting!
